Euthanasia in the Social Affairs Committee : The wolf has come out of hiding

In the social affairs committee, MPs have validated an equal right of access to euthanasia as for assisted suicide whereas euthanasia was supposed to remain exceptional.

A year after the beginning of the debates, the framework of safeguards boasted by the promoters of the legalisation of assisted suicide have constantly been evolving, to the extent that soon there will remain no limits restricting the administration of death. From one parliamentary examination to the next, the safeguards are being deleted one after the other: In the new text being presented by MP Falorni, the criteria proposed for accessing assisted suicide and euthanasia are already as broad as they are unverifiable. The procedure is simple, or even expeditious, at the discretion of a single doctor, and any attempt at opposition to euthanasia would be censured and criminalized.

Alliance VITA therefore confirms its alert: Forcing through the legalisation of assisted suicide and euthanasia at a time when our society is fractured by the severe crisis affecting our health system, is blatantly irresponsible.

According to Tugdual Derville, the Alliance VITA spokesman:

“What is happening clarifies the stakes, because the wolf is coming out of hiding. Nobody can now be unaware that the safeguards which were once proclaimed have become mere subterfuges intended to reassure the undecided. The prohibition against killing, once it is removed, will invade the spaces which were claimed to be protected; experience abroad stands as proof. The text which is currently worse at least has the merit of simplifying the question aimed at parliament: either suicide prevention is still a matter of universal solidarity, or else we will be excluding the most vulnerable of our fellow citizens. The remainder of the debates are a dupe’s game which must not fool anyone.”

Alliance VITA has launched a national campaign: “We want care, not euthanasia!” Leaflets are being handed out all over France and a major mobilisation event will be taking place in some fifty towns on Monday 12th May, which is the date of the start of the examination of the proposed bill during a public session of the National Assembly.

All information about the campaign is available on the Alliance VITA web-site.
