PRESS RELEASE – 28th January 2026

End-of-life: More mobilisation needed at the National Assembly

Following the vote by the Senators, Alliance VITA is launching a mobilisation towards the National Assembly

Amidst great confusion, the senators have rejected the text which they had stripped of the principle of medical assistance in dying by assisted suicide and euthanasia, just last week. The debates at the Senate clearly showed the absence of consensus on this major ethical breakdown.

Despite the oppositions expressed in the Senate, despite the growing concerns within society regarding the consequences of euthanasia on the most fragile, despite the priorities clearly expressed by the French public calling first and foremost for effective access to care, the government has chosen to accelerate the parliamentary calendar. It has scheduled the second reading by the National Assembly of the two proposed bills on the end of life.

On 5th February, the texts adopted by the National Assembly last May will be returned to the National Assembly social affairs commission, prior to their public session examination on 16th February.

According to Tugdual Derville, the Alliance VITA spokesman : “In the current political, economic and social context marked by deep uncertainty, at a time when the crisis in the health system is bearing heavily on the everyday life of the French public and that nearly 50 % of them still have no access to palliative care, the will to hasten the legislative process aiming to lift the prohibition against killing constitutes a major irresponsibility.”

The government should on the contrary suspend the debates relating to the authorisation of a so-called “assistance in dying” and instead propose an emergency programming law on palliative care, the only method capable of guaranteeing the human means and funding to meet the needs.

Alliance VITA is calling for a public demonstration in the surroundings of the National Assembly on 16th February and will be launching a campaign aimed at the public authorities.
